The wreckage of the Titanic was discovered on September 1, 1985, by a team of scientists led by Robert Ballard, a marine geologist and oceanographer. The wreckage was found at a depth of approximately 12,500 feet (3,800 meters) on the floor of the North Atlantic Ocean, about 370 miles (600 km) south-southeast of Newfoundland, Canada.
