Sir Roger Bannister’s most famous achievement came on May 6, 1954, when he became the first person in history to run a mile in under four minutes. He completed the mile run in 3 minutes and 59.4 seconds at the Iffley Road track in Oxford, England. This achievement is considered one of the greatest moments in the history of middle-distance running.
Bannister represented Great Britain in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics and finished fourth in the 1500 meters (approximately a mile), which further fueled his determination to break the four-minute mile barrier.
In addition to his athletic pursuits, Bannister pursued a successful medical career. He became a distinguished neurologist and made significant contributions to the field of neurology.
The former athlete served as the first Chairman of the Sports Council of Great Britain, where he played a crucial role in promoting sports and physical fitness.
