Martha Skelton Jefferson, born Martha Wayles Skelton, was the wife of Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States.
Martha Skelton was born on October 30, 1748, in Charles City County, Virginia, in the British American colonies.
She married Thomas Jefferson on January 1, 1772. They had a happy and loving marriage, and Thomas Jefferson referred to her as “Patsy.”
Martha and Thomas had six children with Thomas Jefferson, but only two daughters survived to adulthood: Martha “Patsy” Jefferson (1772–1836) and Mary “Polly” Jefferson (1778–1804).
As stated earlier, Martha Skelton Jefferson was married to Thomas Jefferson from 1772 until her death in 1782, serving as the First Lady of Virginia during his gubernatorial term from 1779 to 1781. Unfortunately, she passed away 19 years before Thomas became president of the United States.
Tragically, Martha Skelton Jefferson’s health declined, and she suffered from various illnesses, including diabetes. She passed away on September 6, 1782, at the age of 33. Her death deeply affected Thomas Jefferson, and he rarely spoke of her in later years.
Although Martha Skelton Jefferson’s never got the chance to serve as First Lady of the United States due to her early death, she is remembered for her role as the wife and partner of Thomas Jefferson, one of the Founding Fathers and a prominent figure in American history.
