Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904) was a French artist known for his historical and Orientalist paintings. The French artist created numerous works inspired by ancient history.

Some of his most notable paintings include: “Cleopatra and Caesar” (1866), “The Cock Fight” (1846), “The Age of Augustus, the Birth of Christ” (1852-1854), “Recreation in a Russian Camp” (1855), “The Slave Market” (1866), “Pollice Verso” (1872), and “L’Eminence Grise” (1873).
