George Raymond Richard Martin, popularly known as George R.R Martin is an American novelist, screenwriter, and TV producer. He is best known for writing his epic fantasy series, “A Song of Ice and Fire”, which was adapted into the Emmy Award-winning HBO TV series “Game of Thrones.”

Childhood and Early Life

Martin was born and raised in Bayonne, New Jersey to Raymond Collins Martin and Margaret Brady Martin. He was the eldest child and had two younger sisters.

When he was 5 years old, he started reading and writing monster stories, which he sold to kids in his neighborhood. He attended Marist High School where he was active member in his school’s chess club and wrote for the school paper. While he was in high school, he developed an interest in comic books and started writing comic fan fiction. His comic “Powerman vs. The Blue Barrier”, won the Alley Award for best fan fiction.

Martin attended Northwestern University where he earned his bachelors and master’s degrees in journalism.

Writing Career and Major Accomplishments

In the early 1970s, Martin began selling science fiction short stories to magazines. His first sale, “The Hero” was featured in Galaxy Magazine. He also won the Hugo and Nebula Awards for his story, “With Morning Comes Mistfall.” In 1977, he published his first novel “Dying of the Light.”

To increase his income, Martin used his chess-playing experience to work as a tournament director for the Continental Chess Association. This role allowed him to establish himself properly in the writing industry.

A Song of Ice and Fire

In the early 1990s, Martin took a break from working in screenwriting to writing novels. Inspired by the famous J.R.R Tolkien, he decided to work on his first epic series. The first book in his “A Song of Ice and Fire” was “A Game of Thrones” was published in 1996. He released five more books in the series between 1998 and 2012. His book series received a lot of critical acclaim and he has sold over 70 million copies in over 40 translations.

He was also known among for killing off fan favorites in his books unexpectedly. Martin feels is right to write more realistically. In 2017, he released “The Sons of the Dragon”, which was a prequel to “A Song of Ice and Fire.” He announced plans to release “The Rise of the Dragon” in 2022, which tells the story of House Targaryen in his series.

Game of Thrones TV Adaptation

In 2007, HBO purchased the TV rights to “A Song of Ice and Fire” and the “Game of Thrones” series aired in 2011. The first season received 13 Primetime Emmy nominations. Although the series concluded in 2019, Martin hadn’t completed the last two books in the installment, “The Winds of Winter” and “A Dream of Spring.”

Awards and Recognition

Throughout his writing and producing career, Martin has won several awards for his works, including the 1988 Bram Stoker Award for Long Fiction for “The Pear-Shaped Man”, 2016, 2018, and 2019 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series for “Game of Thrones.” He has also won over 12 Locus Awards, as well as several Hugo and Nebula Awards.

He received the Northwestern University Medill Hall of Achievement award in 2015 and an honorary doctorate from his alma mater.

In 2019, he was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame.

He joined the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America, and the Writers Guild of America, where he is a member.

Personal Life

Martin dated Lisa Tuttle in the 1970s. The couple co-wrote “Windhaven” before splitting. In 1975, he married Gale Burnick but the couple divorced four years later.

He married Parris McBride in 2011. They held a much bigger second wedding ceremony at the 69th World Science Fiction Convention.
