“Dahomey Amazon” is work by Élisée Reclus (1830-1905). The French geographer and writer wrote about the Dahomey Amazons in his 1905 work “The Earth and its Inhabitants.” In his account, Reclus describes the Dahomey Amazons as an impressive all-female military unit known for their bravery and discipline. He also notes the important role they played in the economy and society of Dahomey, both as protectors of the kingdom and as participants in the very lucrative slave trade.
