The said operation was launched in response to the urgent need for intervention in Haiti, which was in political turmoil. In preparation for the airborne invasion, United States Navy, Coast Guard, and Air Force units were positioned in Puerto Rico and southern Florida. These forces, along with elements of the Joint Special Operations Command, specifically the headquarters of the 75th Ranger Regiment, spearheaded the operation. They were followed by the 3rd Special Forces Group, the U.S. Army 7th Transportation Group responsible for watercraft and terminal operations, and the 10th Mountain Division.

To support this mission, staging areas were established at Hunter Army Airfield and Guantanamo Bay Naval Base. The 1st Brigade of the 10th Mountain Division was deployed to Haiti, with transportation provided by the USS America and USS Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Overseeing the operation was Lieutenant General Hugh Shelton, who commanded Joint Task Force 120 (JTF-120) and was provided with support from Commander, Carrier Group Two.

The image serves as a testament to the dedication and bravery of the soldiers involved in securing Port-au-Prince Airport, as they played a crucial role in the initial phases of Operation Uphold Democracy.
